i-Mode is a 'WAP-like' mobile internet service originating in Japan. Unlike the original WAP implementations, i-Mode does not require a gateway to translate requests  and is a much more "open" system. The transport layers use an IP-based architecture across packet switched radio networks (GPRS/PDC-P). The i-Mode service also specifies an email program interface. Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo launched the i-mode service in 1999. NTT DoCoMo has established business models based on revenue sharing with the content and application service providers and built up a large base of compatible applications.
DoCoMo has started exporting i-Mode technologies outside Japan, beginning with minority investments in several foreign carriers including Netherland's KPN, Germany's ePlus, France's Bouygues Telecom, Belgium's BASE, and Spain's Telefonica Moviles.
